When one operates in binaries, one invokes the specter of “Palestinian violence” simply by talking about non-violence. By making a spectacle of non-violence, journalists treat it as though it is something extraordinary; by saying, “Look, look, now they’re non-violent!” one implies that Palestinians were and are inherently violent. Hebrew or not, the album owes a lot to the English language protest song tradition. Besides the title song and its Irish roots, it features three other translations from English. My adaptation of Sinead O’Connor’s “Black Boys on Mopeds” refers to Palestinian children killed by Israeli forces, such as the late Abir Aramin. Ewan Maccol’s “The Moving on Song,” originally concerned with the fate of migrant workers and tinkers in the British Isles, is dedicated to migrants workers and African refugees, who are regularly mistreated by our authorities. “In The Neighborhood” by Tom Waits opens the album. Strangely, when translated, it gives a precise image of a Jaffa neighborhood where I lived for three years. An uprising within the Israeli establishment is preventing an insane war from being started. In how many other countries could such a thing happen? This is a proud moment for Israel’s democracy.
People don’t realize what a miracle is taking place in this country. A revolt by the Israeli military/intelligence establishment and Israel’s best reporters, helped along by President Shimon Peres and ultimately enabled by the Obama administration, is stopping an insane war from being launched by Israel’s two ideologically insane political leaders, a war they’ve been planning for years.
